Virtual Hearings - Top Tips

It looks like virtual or electronic hearings are here to stay. Here’s our top tips:

  • Do a test

Test your equipment before the day. Hearings can be stressful enough without worrying if your headphones are connected or your camera is giving you double chins. Make sure you’re on a good internet connection to avoid any dropouts.

  • Pick your spot

Do make sure you are in a location with minimal distractions or background noise so you can focus on the proceedings, dogs and children create the worst distractions.

  • Get settled

Do have everything you need with you in the room. Notes of what you want to say, a pen and pad to take further notes, tissues, a glass of water. Nother food or drink should be consumed.

  • Know when to be seen and heard

If you’re not required to talk to the Court, keep your camera off and microphone muted. This will prevent you from distracting other attendees and incurring the wrath of the judicial officer!

  • Allocate time

Even if you are told your matter is listed for 9.30am on the day, be prepared to allocate the entire day to your hearing. There will be other matters in the list and you may not be heard first.
